DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS
The Department of Statistics at Ondokuz Mayıs University's Faculty of Science was established in 1982, and it began its undergraduate programs in the 1982-1983 academic year. The department, which has approximately 200 students, is staffed by a total of 17 academic personnel including 9 professors, 3 associate professors, 1 doctorate-level lecturer, 1 teaching assistant, and 3 research assistants. The primary goal of the Department of Statistics is to offer a well-balanced Statistics program for prospective statisticians who can work in various fields including university education.
The objective of the program offered in the Department of Statistics is to provide students with a strong foundation in both the application and theory of basic statistical techniques, to enhance the students' ability to draw analytical conclusions, and to train statisticians equipped with the knowledge and skills required by both private and public institutions. In today's age, often referred to as the information era, the need for current and reliable information is steadily increasing. Therefore, the need for statistical information related to a society's economy and culture is rapidly growing. Alongside this increasing need, the healthy collection, summarization, provision of forward-looking information, evaluation, and interpretation of data are becoming extremely important.
In today's world, where nearly everything is expressed and interpreted through numbers, it becomes evident that Statistics is a fundamental tool for improving quality and efficiency. The Department of Statistics aims to train statisticians who will accurately collect information on topics that need illumination, summarize this information, skillfully apply existing statistical methods to derive results, and present these findings in an understandable manner.
In addition to providing fundamental theoretical and practical knowledge, students are also introduced to and trained in a modern computer laboratory environment using versatile software packages, preparing them for life after university.
Graduates are preferably employed in various sectors, both private and public, in roles involving research, planning, measurement, evaluation, management, production planning, project management, and decision-making, as well as in stock exchanges and banks.
In the spring semester of their fourth year, our students take a Professional Practice Program (PPP) course. Students who have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and no pending courses are given the opportunity to work four days a week at companies we have agreements with, insured and paid at one third of the minimum wage.
Additionally, double major programs (ÇAP) are conducted in collaboration with the Departments of Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mathematics.
We offer postgraduate programs in Master's (both in Turkish and English), PhD (both in Turkish and English), and a Master’s in Data Science (with and without thesis).
