DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS
Ondokuz Mayıs University, Faculty of Science, Department of Statistics was established in 1982 and started its undergraduate program in the 1982-1983 academic year. Currently, the department has approximately 226 students and is supported by an academic staff of 17, including 9 professors, 3 associate professors, 1 assistant professor, 1 lecturer, and 3 research assistants. The primary goal of the Statistics Department is to provide a well-balanced statistical program that trains future statisticians capable of working in various fields, including university teaching.
The program aims to equip students with a strong foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of basic statistical techniques, enhancing their analytical thinking skills and preparing them to meet the information and expertise needs of both private and public sectors. In today's information age, the demand for accurate and reliable data has been rapidly increasing. Thus, the need for statistical information related to a society's economy and culture is growing fast. In parallel with this increasing demand, the ability to collect, summarize, and evaluate data and make forward-looking predictions and decisions is becoming crucial.
Statistics plays a key role in improving quality and productivity, as nearly everything in our world today is expressed and interpreted through numbers. The department's aim is to educate statisticians who can effectively collect, summarize, and apply statistical methods to generate insightful conclusions and present them in a clear and understandable way.
In addition to providing essential theoretical and applied knowledge, the department offers students opportunities to practice and refine their skills in a modern computer lab environment using multi-purpose software programs. In their senior year, students also participate in the Professional Application Program (MUP), where students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and no failed courses can work in partner companies, receiving insurance and a stipend equal to 1/3 of the minimum wage.
Graduates of the Statistics Department can pursue careers in both the private and public sectors, including research and planning, evaluation and measurement, management, production planning, project management, and decision-making. Additionally, graduates are often employed in banks and stock markets. The department also offers the opportunity to pursue a Double Major (ÇAP) with departments such as Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mathematics.
Finally, graduates are awarded diplomas bearing the Turkey Qualifications Framework (TYÇ) logo, ensuring that their degrees have national and international recognition.
